The former wife of Beatles legend Paul McCartney, Heather Mills, says that she too was a victim of the illegal used cell phone hacking activity carried out by journalists, which has become an extraordinary scandal in the United Kingdom. Mills claims that a reporter from United Kingdom newspaper publisher Trinity Mirror confessed to her ten years ago, back in 2001, that he had hacked into her cell phone in order to dig up juicy gossip for a story on her and McCartney.
Mills has told the BBC’s “Newsnight” program that the journalist backed off from printing the story after she confronted him with the fact that he had obviously gotten the story from her cell phone, after he “started quoting verbatim the messages from my machine”. Mills says that she confronted the reporter, saying “You’ve obviously hacked my phone and if you do anything with this story… I’ll go to the police”, at which point the reporter backed off, admitting “Okay, okay, we did hear it on your voice messages… I won’t run it”.
Trinity Mirror publishes three newspapers in the United Kingdom, The Daily Mirror, People and The Daily Telegraph. While the scandal so far has seen the majority of the accusations and arrests centered on Rupert Murdoch’s News International organization, it now appears that other tabloids in Britain are starting to be dragged into the ever-growing scandal.
