Well, not much. Both of these numbers do the same thing: they\u2019re used to identify mobile phones. Most likely you\u2019ll need an IMEI or MEID number if you want to:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>sell or recycle your phone<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>unlock it<\/li>\n<li>tell your carrier if it gets stolen or you lose it<\/li>\n<li>get it repaired<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The reason we\u2019ve written a blog about it is that you\u2019ll have one of these numbers depending on what type of phone you have:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>if your phone is on the CDMA network you\u2019ll have an MEID number<\/li>\n<li>if it\u2019s on the GSM network then you\u2019ll have an IMEI number<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Luckily for you, and for us, both numbers are usually to be found in the same place. Let\u2019s take a look at 5 easy ways to hunt them down.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Got an iPhone? Check the back<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Depending on which model iPhone you have, the IMEI should be printed on the back of your device. Top tip: turn the IMEI number into a MEID number by taking off the last digit. Bingo.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019ll be in small text though, so you might need to get your binoculars out. If you don\u2019t have one of these models, then&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Dial-in *#06#<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some phones will give up their IMEI or MEID if you simply dial-in *#06# to the keypad. So here endeth this blog post? Sadly not &#8211; because this trick doesn\u2019t always work (I just tried it on my HTC One and got an error message). So if this method fails\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Check your cell\u2019s Settings menu<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The IMEI or MEID should be findable from the Settings menu (or similar) on your device. Check the battery<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If steps 1 through 3 haven\u2019t worked, check under your mobile phone\u2019s battery. Pull it out, clear out all the dust and the IMEI or MEID number should be helpfully located on a sticker somewhere.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Kept your phone\u2019s box? You\u2019re in luck\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re one of the few people to actually keep hold of packaging, well done. Dig it out, fish out whatever you\u2019re storing in it and the IMEI or MEID number should be on the back.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve found your cell\u2019s IMEI or MEID number, jot it down and store it somewhere.
