{"id":15814,"date":"2023-08-31T13:20:53","date_gmt":"2023-08-31T13:20:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sellcell.com\/blog\/?p=15814"},"modified":"2024-01-17T13:36:28","modified_gmt":"2024-01-17T13:36:28","slug":"older-generations-biggest-contributors-to-e-waste","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sellcell.com\/blog\/older-generations-biggest-contributors-to-e-waste\/","title":{"rendered":"Older Generations Biggest Contributors to E-Waste"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Baby Boomers could have up to 154 million bits of old tech waiting to go to landfill<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>US baby boomers could be holding on to 154 million old tech devices as new data shows they are ten times less likely to recycle cell phones and gadgets than millennials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s according to research by the tech recycling experts at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sellcell.com\/\">SellCell<\/a> who looked at who\u2019s leading the green tech revolution and who is damaging the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They discovered <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baby_boomers\">Baby Boomers<\/a> in their 60s and 70s need to catch up when it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sellcell.com\/cell-phone-recycling\/\">recycling old tech<\/a> with millennials leading the way.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The data shows that two years ago Baby Boomers&#8217; share of total tech recycling was 11% whereas today that has fallen to just 5%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Much E-Waste is Recycled in the US?<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/iWglzkGur216Msgx8YskfJ0JCHivjM-g11XKZOaUAaZQSliV0ubDzNAlMxmsT4R4igEmBQyJQZ_4C3ivFwYecYqP9LkN7Q5_N4zIOpO9jgEPjxiffHqh1EwB9IcKyVS97WJx1tHCNxxVhi8IWu2Z8oc\" alt=\"Mobile phone recycling image\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%22%20viewBox%3D%220%200%20400%20400%22%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" alt=\"Mobile phone recycling image\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" data-src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/iWglzkGur216Msgx8YskfJ0JCHivjM-g11XKZOaUAaZQSliV0ubDzNAlMxmsT4R4igEmBQyJQZ_4C3ivFwYecYqP9LkN7Q5_N4zIOpO9jgEPjxiffHqh1EwB9IcKyVS97WJx1tHCNxxVhi8IWu2Z8oc\" class=\" lazyload\"><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Figures show that in the US around 15% of all e-waste is recycled and with baby boomers only accounting for 5% of that figure the number of devices potentially heading for landfill is staggering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are approximately 86 million baby boomers living in the US &#8211; with an average of 1.8 old devices each at a generational recycling rate of 0.75% that\u2019s close to 154 million bits of tech being dumped into the earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Old electronics are full of toxic stuff like arsenic, cadmium and lead that will leak into our ecosystem if buried in a landfill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite being dubbed \u2018the greenest generation\u2019 for avoiding single-use plastics, buying fewer clothes and shopping locally, baby boomers have fallen further behind in tech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Millennials lead the way, accounting for 50% of all tech recycling with Gen Z and Gen X on 22.5% each and Baby Boomers a distant last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tech Recycling Data &#8211; The Best &amp; Worst Recyclers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The following charts show the best and worst recycling groups by gender, age, age group, state and also by tech brand type. asked why Baby Boomers were so far behind other generations when it came to recycling their phones and gadgets, Linda, from Florida suggested a lack of understanding of how to recycle tech was a big factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said:<em><strong> \u201c<\/strong><\/em>I have mentioned to some of my friends in Florida that there are sites you can use to recycle tech and earn money but I don\u2019t think any of them have ever looked. It\u2019s a terrible excuse I know but things seem to take much longer to do and older generations need to be shown hands-on how to go through the recycling process&#8217;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Everything in our community is word of mouth so there needs to be enough of our generation taught how to recycle our tech before things start to improve. My husband tends to hand his phones on to me or the kids but we have a lot of old tech sitting around in drawers.
