But, while it may be needed to excel in our everyday lives, how much money should we really be shelling out to have one? And do you even know how much you\u2019re already paying for that cell phone of yours? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just a public service announcement here\u2026Your cell phone\u2026it\u2019s costing you a lot, and you might just want to stop reading now and plead ignorance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, if you keep reading and actually learn why it\u2019s costing you so much, you can take action and bring that cost down. Moreover, <strong>we\u2019ll teach you how to do it in this article<\/strong>. I mean, how would you like to save hundreds of dollars every year on your cell phone? Read on. We\u2019ll show you how. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Cell Phone Purchase<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the biggie. Most people know about the big price tag of a cell phone, but it\u2019s often masked because they opt for the payment plan instead of just buying a new phone outright (to be discussed in more detail later). Think about your last cell phone purchase. What did you actually pay for it? Do you know?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it was a brand new iPhone, it probably cost you $800 or more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about that. How much do you earn per hour? Now take 30% off from that number for taxes. How many hours of work does it take you to buy one cell phone?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Let\u2019s say you earn $20 an hour.&nbsp;<\/li><li>After tax, that\u2019s $14 an hour.<\/li><li>$800\/$14 an hour is 57 hours!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It would take you a solid week and a half of working full-time to buy a cell phone. Let\u2019s continue to roll with that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/taxes\/2018\/03\/27\/states-highest-and-lowest-sales-taxes\/452512002\/\">USA Today<\/a>, the average sales tax rate in the United States is approximately 6.0%. On a phone that costs $800, that\u2019s an additional $48 that you may not have even considered dishing out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, it\u2019s real and it\u2019s coming out of your pocket every time you buy a new cell phone!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Activation Fee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It takes time for a cell provider to switch you over from one phone to another, so whether you like it or not, they typically charge for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Below are the activation fees by provider:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Verizon: $40 (currently $20 if you purchase your phone online)<\/li><li>T-Mobile: $0<\/li><li>Sprint: $30<\/li><li>AT&amp;T: $40<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The average activation fee: approximately $30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Payment Plan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most providers offer a payment plan for cell phone purchases. And, shockingly enough, most also don\u2019t charge any type of interest on those payments. So technically, there\u2019s no additional cost for you to do this. But there must be something in it for the cell phone provider, right? I mean, a large company doesn\u2019t just loan out money for nothing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What\u2019s in it for them?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The monthly service fee. That\u2019s where they\u2019re really making their money. And, as long as you owe money on your phone, you\u2019re likely not going to cancel your plan or switch providers because you likely don\u2019t have the hundreds of dollars in your account that you still owe on that phone!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, you just keep paying the monthly plan rate until your phone is finally paid for\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what is the average service plan rate per month? I\u2019m so glad you asked!&#8230; \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Monthly Plan Rate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How much do these cell phone providers earn each and every month? Based on the websites of the top four providers, the monthly rates are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Verizon: $70\/mo.<\/li><li>T-Mobile: $60\/mo.<\/li><li>Sprint: $60\/mo.<\/li><li>AT&amp;T: $65\/mo.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>*Pricing above is for unlimited text, talk, and data for a single user; rates as of June 2020<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Taxes and Fees<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfoundation.org\/\">TaxFoundation.org<\/a>, taxes on cell service is much higher than a typical sales tax rate. In fact, when reviewing all 50 states in the U.S., taxes and fees make up 21% of the average person\u2019s cell phone bill each month. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you do the math, this means that if your monthly plan rate is $60, your final bill will actually be $76! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s an extra $16 in charges you probably never considered!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Insurance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your phone costs $800\u2026 Ummmm, what if you dropped it and the screen broke? Or worse yet, it wouldn\u2019t turn on again?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Just the thought of that makes you think, <\/strong><strong><em>insurance<\/em><\/strong>. Because you know what? The last thing you want to do is have to buy another $800 phone!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what is that insurance actually costing you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m currently a Verizon Wireless customer. Below are the different insurance plans they offer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Extended warranty<\/strong> &#8211; $5 a month \u2013 this covers you beyond the standard 1-year manufactures warranty on your phone<\/li><li><strong>Tech Coach<\/strong> &#8211; $9 a month \u2013 to get you through all of your techie issues<\/li><li><strong>Wireless phone protection<\/strong> &#8211; $6.85\/mo.&nbsp;<ul><li>unlimited cracked screen repairs ($29 per claim)<\/li><li>next day device replacement for loss, theft, and damage<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Total Equipment Coverage<\/strong> &#8211; $11\/mo.&nbsp;<ul><li>Wireless phone protection plus battery replacement<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Total Mobile protection<\/strong> &#8211; $15\/mo.&nbsp;<ul><li>Total Equipment coverage plus tech coach support<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Verizon Protect<\/strong> &#8211; $17\/mo.&nbsp;<ul><li>Total Mobile protection plus wi-fi security, monitor ID theft and malicious content<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019d say almost everyone gets the \u201cWireless phone protection\u201d plan that costs $6.85\/mo. If you drop your phone and the screen cracks (which is pretty easy to do with most iPhones), you still have to cough up $29 every time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you <em>don\u2019t<\/em> get the insurance, this can cost you $150-$200 to get repaired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s say on average that people get the insurance, but they still drop their phone once a year. Chances are, you\u2019re going to buy all of these.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Airpods: $160<\/li><li>iPhone case with screen protector: $40<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And quite honestly, many people buy even more stuff for their phones like a holder for their car, a pop-socket, multiple cases with different color schemes, bluetooth speakers\u2026 The list could probably go on and on, but in all fairness to you frugal folks out there, I won\u2019t even count these semi-lavish accessories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">App Purchases and Overspend Due to Ease of Purchase<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You might think these costs are a bit of a reach as well, but I can\u2019t in good conscience ignore them. The spend DOES happen here. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First of all, the app purchases. Some apps are free, but they require upgrades for full-service use. Others cost money up-front that you willingly pay if it consistently improves your day-to-day life (or at least, keeps it from being extra-sucky). The long and short of it is though, that <strong>smart phones aren\u2019t really all that great unless you\u2019ve got it loaded with apps, and quite a few apps cost money<\/strong>. Therefore, it\u2019s yet another way that your cell phone is costing you money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Secondly, when you put a high-tech computer in the palm of your hand and you can buy anything you can think of in less than a minute, <strong>extra expenses are going to happen in your life<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like the additional accessories, I\u2019m not going to try to quantify this and include it in the tally, but the extra spend is real. That\u2019s $1,622 a year! Yikes!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a $20 an hour job (minus the 30% you\u2019ll pay in taxes), you\u2019ll have to work 116 hours to cover the cost of your cell phone each year. That\u2019s three solid weeks of work just to pay for that little computer in your hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cost is simply outrageous. I think so! Let\u2019s check out the other areas of expense:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Activation fee<\/li><li>The monthly plan rate<\/li><li>Taxes and fees<\/li><li>Insurance<\/li><li>Repairs<\/li><li>Accessories<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Believe it or not, it is possible to negotiate a lower activation fee when buying a new cell phone. Some providers will cancel the fee if you ask. Others will pretty quickly cut it in half.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The monthly plan rate is tricky and are often pretty static. But, if you work for a large company or are a veteran, you may be able to get a discount on your monthly bill (with just a little bit of effort, you should be able to knock 5% off the standard rate).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taxes and fees \u2013 These will naturally come down if you can get your monthly plan rates reduced, so put for that!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How about insurance? Should you do without the insurance plan? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Personally, I never purchase the insurance plan. But, I\u2019m careful with my phone and rarely drop it. I figure the function of the phone is already covered under the manufacturer\u2019s warranty for the first year, so if make it another year or two after that, it\u2019s a win. And, I can save myself $82 a year that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If, however, you\u2019re careless and you drop your phone often, it might be a better deal for you to pay for the insurance. (Either that or buy one of those mondo cases that will protect your phone from a multi-ton smash (like you know, riding over it with your car)).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And of course, that move will save you in repair costs too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Finally, how about those accessories?
