{"id":1122,"date":"2012-06-08T11:35:38","date_gmt":"2012-06-08T11:35:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/beta.sellcell.com\/blog\/?p=1122"},"modified":"2019-04-12T11:07:30","modified_gmt":"2019-04-12T11:07:30","slug":"the-future-of-cell-phones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sellcell.com\/blog\/the-future-of-cell-phones\/","title":{"rendered":"The future of cell phones"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sellcell.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/1.jpg\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1123\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sellcell.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/1.jpg\" alt width=\"180\" height=\"120\"><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1123 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%22%20viewBox%3D%220%200%20180%20120%22%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" alt width=\"180\" height=\"120\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.sellcell.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/1.jpg\"><\/a>Every time a new cell phone comes out, consumers avidly gather around it, both in person and online, in order to examine it for exciting new features.&nbsp; Someday soon, one of those new features may be a radio chip so that cell phones can pick up signals from local radio stations.&nbsp; Jeff Smulyan, who serves as CEO of Emmis Communications, certainly hopes that cell phones will go in that direction.&nbsp; In fact, he testified on the issue this week before the US House of Representatives, speaking to the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Communications and Technology during a presentation on the \u2018future of audio\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Smulyan began by emphasizing that he was not testifying in support of a mandate; not does he even support the concept of one.&nbsp; Instead, he wishes to see expanded education on the subject of how radio chips in cell phones can provide huge benefits.&nbsp; Smulyan also explained that some current cell phones already contain such chips, yet they generally remain inactivated and therefore of no use to the end consumer.<\/p>\n<p>Many of Smulyan&#8217;s points centered on the cost savings that can be realized through using radio chips: &#8220;Today, mobile customers are streaming music through apps they\u2019ve downloaded, but in the process, they are probably racking up hefty charges to their data plans\u2026. A radio chip, on the other hand, picks up the free, over-the-air broadcast signal\u2026.&nbsp; [and provides] a way to listen to music and information for free without meeting and exceeding their data
